Privacy Policy

Effective date: 26 September 2026 · Applies to the Buddhism: Daily Dharma app for iPhone (bundle identifier com.gabrielpetersen.dailydharma)

In short

1. Who is responsible

The app is published by Gabriel Petersen. Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to gpmediacontact@gmail.com.

2. What the app stores on your device

The app keeps its data in a local database (SQLite) inside the app's own storage on your iPhone. This includes:

None of this is sent to us. The app does not read your journal for any purpose other than showing it to you, exporting it when you ask, and counting factual totals such as days practised. It does not analyse mood, score your reflections, or infer anything from what you write.

3. What leaves your device, and who receives it

Apple

Payments, subscription renewals, cancellations, and refunds are handled entirely by Apple through your Apple ID. We never see your payment card details. Apple's handling of this data is described in Apple's privacy policy.

How the app checks your subscription

To confirm whether a Daily Dharma Plus subscription is active, the app asks StoreKit, the purchase framework built into iOS, for the current status of your App Store subscription. That check happens on your device between iOS and Apple; the app has no server of its own and uses no third-party subscription service. The app keeps only the result (active or not, and the renewal date) so it can work offline. We never receive an identifier for you, and nothing about your journal or practice is involved in the check.

Nothing else

The app contains no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no social login, no crash-reporting service that receives your text, and no chatbot or remote AI service. Practice explanations were written during development, before release, and are bundled with the app; nothing you do in the app is sent to an AI service.

4. Notifications

Notifications are optional and scheduled locally on your device; there is no push server. You can turn on up to two daily reminders (morning and evening). Their wording is generic and fixed, for example "A few minutes for today's practice." It never includes your journal text, the lesson you are on, or the theme you chose. If you ask for it, the timer can also post a single notification when a sit finishes. You can turn reminders off in the app or in iOS Settings → Notifications at any time. Declining notifications changes nothing else about the app.

5. Device narration

Optional read-aloud uses the speech synthesis built into iOS, with the voices installed on your device. Text is spoken by your iPhone; it is not sent to us or to any other service. Narration is off by default. It is a synthetic device voice, not a recording of a teacher or any other person.

6. Backups, reinstalling, and losing a device

Because the app's data lives only on your iPhone, it is subject to your device's normal backup behaviour. If you use iCloud Backup or back up your iPhone to a computer, the app's database may be included in that backup under Apple's terms. We do not operate any cloud sync or backup of our own.

This means: if you delete the app, reinstall it, or lose or replace your iPhone, your journal and practice history are gone unless an iOS backup restores them. Restoring a subscription through Apple restores access to Daily Dharma Plus, but it does not restore your journal. If your entries matter to you, use Export (below) from time to time.

7. Export and deletion

8. Retention

9. Children

The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app does not ask for or store your age or date of birth. If you believe a child has used the app and you have a concern, contact us at the address below. Subscription purchases made with a child's Apple ID are governed by Apple's Family Sharing and purchase controls.

10. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete personal data, and to complain to a data protection authority. Because your journal and practice data never leave your device, you exercise those rights directly in the app: read, edit, export, or delete any entry, or delete everything. We hold no record of you at all. We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.

11. Security

Data on your device is protected by your iPhone's own safeguards, such as your passcode or Face ID and the protection iOS applies to app data. The app does not add its own encryption layer, and it has no server of its own to protect. Communication with Apple's App Store is handled by iOS over encrypted connections.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change what the app collects or how it is handled, we will update this page and the effective date, and describe the change in the app's release notes. Continued use after a change means the updated policy applies.
